Lantern collects almost nothing, and we would rather keep it that way. This policy describes exactly what leaves your device and why.
Everything you actually do in the app: which words you have seen, how well you know each one in each language, your streak, your points, your chosen languages and topics. None of it is sent to us. It lives on your iPhone.
If you have iCloud enabled, that data syncs through your own private iCloud account so it follows you between devices. We cannot read it. Apple provides the storage; we never receive a copy.
The app fetches word lists from our server. These requests contain no account identifier and nothing about you — they ask for words and receive words. Standard server logs may briefly record an IP address, as any web server does.
If you open the Friends screen and Game Center is enabled on your device, two numbers are submitted to Apple Game Center: your longest streak and your number of words learned. These are visible to people you have added as friends in Game Center.
This is handled entirely by Apple. We never see your Game Center identity, your friends list, or your email address. If Game Center is switched off, nothing is submitted and the rest of the app is unaffected.
Nothing about which words you studied, which languages you are weak in, or how you answered ever leaves your device.
Lantern shows no advertising anywhere in the app. The one exception is entirely opt-in: on the home screen you may choose to watch a short video to earn two extra practice rounds for that day. Nothing is ever shown unless you tap that, and nothing is ever shown during a session. If you own Second Light or subscribe to Lightkeeper, the offer is removed altogether and the ad SDK never requests anything.
Those videos are served by Google AdMob. We request non-personalised ads, which means AdMob is not permitted to use your activity to target them. If you are in the EU or another region requiring consent, a consent form is shown before any ad is ever requested, and you may decline — the app is unaffected. To deliver and measure a video, Google receives a device identifier, an approximate location derived from your IP address, whether the video was watched or dismissed, and technical diagnostics — never your progress, your languages or your answers. Its use of that data is described in Google's privacy policy.
We receive no personal data back from Google — only aggregate counts of how many videos were watched.
Subscriptions and purchases are processed entirely by Apple. We receive anonymised sales reports from App Store Connect. We never see your payment details, card, or billing address.
Lantern is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children.
Because we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to export or erase. To remove everything Lantern has stored, delete the app; to remove synced data, delete it from iCloud in iOS Settings. To remove your Game Center scores, use Apple's Game Center privacy controls.
If this policy changes in a way that affects what leaves your device, the change will be described here with a new date, and in the app before it takes effect.
